The first private university and the number one ranked private university of Bangladesh, North South University (NSU) celebrated the International Day of Mathematics 2022 on March 24, 2022. The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide celebration officially celebrated each year on March 14. The day is also celebrated in many countries as “π” day.
The first three significant digits of the mathematical constant “π” are 3.14, which is also used in many counties to represent the date March 14. The IDM celebration expands Pi Day to include the whole spectrum of mathematics. Due to the restriction of “in-person campus activities” until March 15, the university shifted the celebration to March 24, 2022, to physically involve the students in this program.
The day was celebrated with a daylong activities arranging a rally, mathematical contest, seminar for students, and a cultural program. The celebration started with a colourful rally in the morning. After the rally, a math contest took place where more than 100 students participated from different disciplines.
In the seminar program held in the afternoon, the vice-chancellor of NSU, Professor Atiqul Islam, joined the program as a chief guest. Professor Dr. Laek Sazzad Andallah, Department of Mathematics, Jahangirnagar University, joined the program as a special guest. The pro-vice-chancellor of NSU Professor Dr. M. Ismail Hossain, the dean of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Professor Dr. Javed Bari, graced the program as honorable guests. The program started with the welcome speech by Dr. Md. Sahadet Hossain, Chairman, Department of Mathematics and Physics, NSU.
Professor Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, NSU said “Mathematics is the key of all sciences. Mathematics, like philosophy, is an area that is used in almost all other disciplines”. He also thanked the Department of Mathematics and Physics for organizing this program. Professor M. Ismail Hossain Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NSU and Professor Javed Bari, Dean, SEPS, NSU extended their warm congratulations to all participants of the math contest.
The special guest, Professor L.S. Andallah, gave an informative and motivational talk for the students on “Mathematics in Engineering and Technology.” The three winners of the mathematical contest were awarded in the program. Professor Dr. Md. Mamun Molla, Department of Mathematics & Physics, NSU, delivered a vote of thanks to the department for organizing the program.
After the seminar program, the NSUSS club member performed the cultural events with an outstanding performance. In the cultural program, there was a song on mathematics written and composed by a senior faculty Dr. Muhammad Asad Uz Zaman. The seminar and the cultural program were hosted by two faculty members, Dr. Preetom Nag and Ms. Afroja Parvin from the Department of Mathematics and Physics, NSU.
