Bumper production of onion likely in Kurigram

The farmers of the district are expecting the bumper production of onion in this season due to favorable climatic condition.

While visiting on the spot the farmer Monnaf 56 and Abdul Jabbar 70 of village Gajaibari under Mogolbacha union of Kurigram Sadar upazila told this correspondent that we have cultivated in two bighas of land. We are expecting for bumper production due to favorable climatic condition and we will start of harvesting soon.

Another farmer Aminul Islam 52 of village Ramratan under Chenai union of Rajarhat upazila told this correspondent that I have cultivated onion on my 30 decimal of land in this season. The cultivation cost in per decimal of land at taka 400 only and it produce 2 mounds. Now the rate of per kg onion in the market at taka 30/-. So my selling rate in per decimal at taka 2400/-. Deducting the production cost 400/- and my net profit at taka 2000/- in per decimal. Similarly a total profit on my 30 decimal at taka 60000/-, he added.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources, a total of 2600 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation with production target of 29325 metric tons.

Upazila wise cultivation are as follows: Some 82 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation at Kurigram Sadar upazila,460 hectares at Ulipur,820 hectares at Chilmari,230 hectares at Roumari,235 hectares at Rajibpur,225 hectares at Bhurungamari,310 hectares at Nageswari,95 hectares at Fulbari and 143 hectares at Rajarhat upazila.
